I don't buy Derek Thompson's response. He's right of course with respect to the shifting paradigm which is to the advantage of women but naive that men will be able to "get over it." The resolution is unclear. Perhaps a return to the small, home-based business (Distributism) is the way to go in order to achieve growth and dynamism while helping marriages.
There was a classic scene where Martin, who made less than his girlfriend Gina, expresses his anxiety to friend Tommy by saying, "she already makes more money than I do, if she's better than me on the radio show I may as well stay home and have the babies." Couldn't find that one but always thought that a big part of Martin's success in comedy was his direct and brutal honesty in areas where we know the truth on a deep level but, due to rules of social engagement, tend not to address them publicly.
